Well if you're already making money from the software the costs are easily justified, but hobbyists and people learning are never going to justify $500-600 on any software, so to ask that just for the renderer is ridiculous. It's even more ridiculous when you consider that PRMan has a free NC license and it has a progressive IPR window which gives very fast feedback and is a more robust renderer overall (coming to C4D very soon too), Arnold is the same and is easily pirated. If they had a NC license for like $50 I wouldn't be surprised if they doubled their revenue.

So, I don't think everyone around is here is oblivious to the fact that illegal cracks of Cinema 4D exist. In fact, I would speculate that probably something like 20-30% of Cinema users use a cracked version. My question is, what do you think about it? Cinema 4D is an awesome program, and with this come a pretty high price point. Do you think that the price point is warranted?
Do you think it's okay to pirate this program, because maybe Maxon's profits are largely based on company use? What if a pirate just toys around in Cinema, and never makes any money. Personally I do think it's wrong, because no matter how you word it, you are still stealing 100's of dollars of product and that's a crime.
But what do you think? Did you ever pirate Cinema? Do you think it's wrong? Do you think Maxon should crack down on piracy? Chime in, I'd love to hear what you have to say.
In the Windows 3.1 and 95 era, it was dead easy to get a product key for Windows. While we've never seen official confirmation, the general consensus was that MSFT knew about rampant piracy, but turned a blind eye so long as legal revenue kept coming in.
Piracy meant more people using Windows, which helped spread use of the platform.I think most wise companies follow the same path - keep the value high, to make users want to own it, but if it's somewhat easy to crack, or get academic copies, that grows the community. Maxon knows full well that their program is by far one of the easiest to 'crack' out there (literally all you have to do is enter a serial # provided by the torrent uploader). They also know that a very large percentage of their user base are teens on the internet looking to trying something different. Personally I think that they do this on purpose (or at least never bothered to use a far more effective means of security), this is my reasoning.I would assume that they allow this so that once some of these people that pirate their software get better and better, they may end up in a studio with a copy or freelancing with a licensed version. That kind of mindset not only helps their profits as a company, but creates an ever increasing licensed user base year by year.I started off with a pirated copy. I used it for about four years and by then I was making enough from freelancing to get myself a studio license (started when I was 17 and I'm 24 now). The reasoning for getting the license was to protect myself in case MAXON audited users on forms, video sites, etc where they could easily find me and find out my real name (that would not of been good.). As well as a thank you to the company who's software is responsible for where I am today in my career.

Since then I have purchased all of my software and it's a very nice feeling when you do!. If I remember right Nick Campbell from GSG have touched on this specific topic. If I remember right he said that it's okay to pirate it, but the moment you start making money from the software you should buy yourself a license. Now, this is just his opinion and not the law. However, I actually agree with him. Because many teenagers wanna stick out and make personal projects which they don't earn jack shit from.
It's not really that easy sticking out if you have to pay a C4D license which would set one back a few hundred bucks. Pirating software that costs thousands of dollars is definitely morally wrong. There is no getting around that.
When you make the decision to pirate software, you KNOWINGLY do something that is wrong, and you accept that fact, and any consequences that happen due to it.But, like said, there are people without thousands of dollars for a license, and without school to help them get software, that are interested in media and creating stuff. Should these people not be allowed to learn and express themselves due to a high pricepoint of software? Maybe, thats not my call to make.In the same way that Pixar is releasing renderman to further the digital 3d community, I believe that if Maxon intends to stop pirating and help be on the frontier of 3d animation innovation, they have to be more accessible to a younger and eager audience.
